Getting licensed is the first step in your career as an insurance broker. In BC, you can start your career with a general insurance level 1 license and then move on to higher licensing levels as you gain experience. You can complete one of two routes to get your licence:
The insurance general insurance level 1 license process includes courses, examinations, and an application. There are a number of different types of insurance (lines of authority) that you can sell under your licence, including home, auto, business, travel and long-term care. Each type of insurance has its own requirements for licensing.

You must pass a national and state insurance exam in order to become licensed. The exams are very difficult, so it is important to prepare well for them. You should take pre-licensing education courses before you sit the exams. These courses are available through IBABC, and they will teach you everything you need to know for the exam.
After completing your pre-licensing education and passing the exam, you will receive an Examination Admission Ticket. This ticket is valid for one year from the date on which it was issued. You must present this ticket to the testing centre in order to schedule your exam.
Once you have passed the examination and met all of the other licensing requirements, you can apply for your licence through NIPR’s online application. Be sure to include all required documents with your application, including fingerprints, and pay the fee.
